I have just received word that Emblem Health will be pulling out of the NY marketplace for small group on January 1, which coincides with the exchanges. They have reportedly lost between 50-100 million in the market.
They will not accept any new groups effective immediately.
Existing groups may continue to enroll members up through the 12/1 effective date. You will have to move employees covered by Emblem Health for January 1. There is reportedly a new option coming to Healthpass for members that live in the 5 boroughs, and may well be more options as well.
I would not recommend Emblem to current employees going forward as I am sure that they are laying off most staff and service (already bad) will probably be worse.
This may be the end of Healthpass as well. With only Oxford, and their new Atlantis EasyChoice products (only for residents of the 5 boroughs of NY) , left in the market, they do not have much to offer. Further, it is more price advantageous to purchase Oxford directly from Oxford if you are not using other Healthpass products.
More to follow, I am sure.
