Roper and United Healthcare continue to negotiate

 From United healthcare:

As you may be aware, CHS’s participation in UnitedHealthcare’s network continues through February 28, 2015 for both commercial and Medicare plans. UnitedHealthcare’s goal has always been to reach a new agreement with CHS that preserves its members’ access to local care without significantly raising the cost of health care.

UnitedHealthcare has been meeting regularly with CHS and remain hopeful that the hospital system will decide to renew its participation in the network, but there are two issues that are a key focus in our discussions:

  • CHS has asked to be paid nearly 150 percent more than other hospitals in the area for providing the same services. This would require local businesses and residents to pay significantly more for their health care. For example, CHS wants to be paid about $5,300 more for a cardiac catheterization than what they’re paid today.
  • UnitedHealthcare has asked CHS to base a portion of their reimbursement on achieving certain quality measures and patient outcomes to help promote better health, but they are resistant. Instead, the hospital system wants to receive bonuses on top of the significant rate increases it is demanding, rather than commit any of its core compensation to these basic, industry standard quality and patient outcomes.

UnitedHealthcare is committed to helping shift the Carolinas’ health care system to one that rewards quality rather than the volume of procedures performed. Most other care providers we work with have embraced performance-based health care, including more than 2,400 primary care physicians who participate in our Medicare primary care incentive program as well as groups that have launched Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) with UnitedHealthcare.
