According to the Milliman Medical index, total costs for a family of 4, on an employer-sponsored PPO plan, rose 6.3% last year to $22,030. Of that amount the average employer payment is $12.886, with the employee paying the $9144 balance. That employee cost consists of $5544 in payroll deductions ($106.61/week) and $3600 in employee out-of-pocket costs.
This now exceeds the costs for groceries for a typical family of four. And, while health care reform may cover more benefits and reduce out-of-pocket costs in some cases, premium increases will probably eat up any savings (and more).
